Yes but if you do that you create a working initrd.lrp that is 
not "backupable".
And you will have to make some modifications to the backup script.

If you use initrd.lrp instead of initrd-new.img and continue on in the process
this still means gzipping and renaming you create a package that can be backed 
up.
Don't just take my word for it, try it. I tried it all out this weekend.
I know it makes the filenames confusing, but I am affraid its the only way
to create a package that can be backed up. And on occasion you might want
to change initrd because of change in bootmedium or creating a larger 
systemsize.
