Just a note about compiling a 2.4.19 kernel for Bering. On booting, the root filesystem is mounted ro (read-only), which causes a kernel panic because /proc can't be created, busybox can't install itself, etc.
Other web sources state that (for older kernels at least) the "root=" parameter overrides the ro setting, but it took rdev -R mykernel 0 to get the 2.4.19 kernel to boot.
