I'm sorry - it was the PCI-E drivers that was removed...

These where the statements that got me on the right track:
" Removed pci-e modules from non-i686 module packages"
and
"removed some useless chipset ATA drivers & PCI-E NIC drivers from 
geode/i486 platforms,"
It seams those where removed from the x686 version as well at some later 
point...
