Thanks for the info, in this case the question is, what _exactly_ should
a function do. Most of the internal functions don't have an explicitly
defined behaviour and put to the test they sometimes yield erratic
results. They may be fine in their context but unuseable otherwise.

I would like to build a library of util functions, which should be the
foundation of future enhancements to the user interface. As the most
basic functions always worked, this has been neglected IMHO. For example
the hwdetect script is written in a way that it _must_ crash on smallish
systems, e.g, < 128 MB.

I will have a look at your functions and with your permission embed them
in a common function library which should be called by all scripts.
