That makes sense and is easy to implement. For partial updates we need
some kind of a compatibility matrix.

Correct. this is why I am concentrating on a full upgrade.

Mhhh... versions are OK, but there may still be dependencies on
libraries, which may have changed. A full release would always be
compatible, but partil updates may not be.

This is misleading

ALIX
SALT# uname -m
i586

WRAP
AP# uname -m
i586

That is why I use the version from initrd.
