The error occurred anywhere from days to minutes after the interface was brought
up. I observed that it seemed to be connected to the amount of network traffic.
For example the NIC that exhibited the fault was the gateway from my office LAN
to the world. Not only did large web downloads cause the error but something as
innocent as a server backup over the network on that segment would also produce
the error. From this it is not just the traffic going through the router but the
traffic passing it too.
I swapped network cards to see if it was hardware or software with no success
but the same logical interface fell over.
