Thaks for providing such a thorough report (deleted here, except for the
small excerpts I actually need). With the info you sent, it is easy for an
experienced eye to see the problem and its likely cause.

Your problem is that you do not have a default route entered, as you can see
from either version of the routing table you posted. For example:

>Kernel IP routing table
>Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
>64.171.17.144   0.0.0.0         255.255.255.248 U     0      0        0 eth0
>192.168.1.0     0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 eth1

In your ping failure ...

># ping 5.5.5.5
>PING 5.5.5.5 (5.5.5.5): 56 data bytes
>ping: sendto: Network is unreachable

... ping correctly reports that it cannot reach that network (or more
precisely, passes that information on from sendto), because the routing
table has no route to any network that includes the address 5.5.5.5. 

So ... what to do about it? Well, it appears to be a mismatch in the
variable name for the default gateway. You have this line in your
configuration file:

> eth0_DEFAULT_GW=164.171.17.145

But later on, Charles' script function that sets the default gateway uses
this variable name:

>               && ip route replace default nexthop via $DEFAULT_GW dev $1

That is, it looks for DEFAULT_GW, not eth0_DEFAULT_GW . I don't know if
Charles made this mistake (improbable; if he did, Dachstein routers would be
failing everywhere they were tried) or if you changed the variable name
yourself (or, to cover all the possibilities, if I'm reading the file
wrong). In any case, I'd suggest you try replacing the earlier line with:

        DEFAULT_GW=164.171.17.145
