To save space, the "small" kernel tree used on the floppy distributions is compiled w/o built-in serial support. Either switch to the "normal" kernel, or d/l and install the serial.o module to get serial support (if you use the module, you get run-time support for serial ports...if you use the kernel, you can have kernel boot messages appear on the serial terminal).
