I think Charles hit the nail on the head. To ensure compatiblity with
Windows9x/ME OS's via telnet, ssh, and virtual terminal the system
is going to have to adapt to ALL_CAPS. What really stuck me as
strange was the constant lag ........It could have been dealing with
another of several dns floods and http syn floods I was having 
yesterday, but everything has been fine since (except for some random
ip's SYN'ing ports 18, 21, and 23). I may have to setup LaBrae
on the other test network to cool down some of these interested 
parties. 

I didn't implicitly state this earlier, but after thoroughly going
through the system there was _no_ indication of any outside
access. I checked sizes of files against a backup copy and 
all configuration .... it was not compromised .. just a couple of
behavioral things I found unusual.
