Did you consider networking over existing phone or power lines? I use HomePNA 
1.0, which is slow, but linux drivers are available for most of the common 
varieties. I haven't seen linux drivers for HomePNA 2.0, but haven't looked 
recently. 

Power-line devices are in the news lately. They are more expensive than 
wireless networks, but may work for you.
