The Why LRP document at http://www.monkeynoodle.org/lrp/LRP-why.html gives some of those answers -- however, you're right that if compared feature-to-feature it's hard to justify spending an hour or two on building a LEAF system instead of buying a box for $50-$100. However, that observation quickly changes if you decide to change something down the road. Want to add wireless ethernet? You can buy another box for $200, or you can add a single card to your LEAF box for $100. Want to make a DMZ? Most of those home routers don't support a DMZ, or if they do they only route to it, no ACLs. Want to port-forward to an internal service? Many home routers can't do that either. Want to have the router manage your PPPoE or PPPoA logins so that you don't need the client software on your PC? LEAF can do that, but I doubt that Linksys can.
