I am using the hostap_pci.o module, so nope this doesn't help me much.

Brad, I will refrain myself from commenting on the fact that you think
your being dense ;-). But this part actually solved my problem, I
did try that prior to sending my first mail, but on looking up what I
had done exactly to put it in my reply I noticed I made a typo in my interfaces
file.
iface wlan0 inet static
     addres ...
     masklen 24
     up iwconfig ...

Notice the one s in addres, once I fixed that everythank worked like a charm.
