I may have a solution to your problem... I had a similar problem with my cable modem, at random times (sometimes days) I have to cut the power to my cable modem. The solution I came up with is 2 part. One part is script and the other is a little circuit. The circuit connects to the serial port on my lrp box and it has a relay that controls the 110V on the cable modem. I have a script that runs (off a cron) and when the script finds it can no longer get out of the modem, it sends a signal to the serial port and that triggers the circuit and the relay falls out and my cable modem shuts off. After the delay time the modem powers up again. By changing the size of a resistor you can change the amount of time the relay stays off. (about 1.5 min with current resister). If you think this may be a solution you can find the scripts, circuit diagram, and etc... at http://www.vette66.com the scripts needed are: pingcheck and checkem. there are instructions as well as the circuit diagram there. I think the circuit was under $10 from Radio Shack parts.
but it solved my problem of having to reboot my cable modem. now the lrp box can do it for me.
