Following up on Tom's reply ... if he's right, then you need to check on your interfaces with "ip addr show", to see if both eth0 and eth1 have come up. This assumes, of course, that you have a regular 2-NIC setup; if, for example, you are instead using a dialup external connection, you have the interfaces specified incorrectly (they will be either ppp0 and eth0 for true dialup, or, usually, ppp0 and eth1 for PPPoE pseudo-dialup).
