There may be a pony in there somewhere, but this sort of response is pure stonewalling ... in that not all POP3 setups exhibit this undescribed "inherent" problem (mine here does not, for instance), indicating the need for some technical details to back up their brushoff of your query. I suggest you ask them either to describe the "inherent" problem or provide a reference URL. Once we have some idea of what they think they are talking about, we might be able to suggest something.I know this is a little off-topic but there are a lot of "gurus" on the list.I use an internal POP3/SMTP email server (IA eMail). Besides being configured to accept my @mullan.ca mail (SMTP), it is also configured to fetch my POP3 from my ISP. Most often, when using my client to retrieve messages from my internal server, most of them come through twice. True North Software says it is a problem inherent in POP3 protocol. Is this true?
Well ... I suppose the first thing to do is to find out where the duplication is occurring ... does the internal server's POP3 client download each message from the ISP's POP3 server twice, or does it only get it once but send it on twice to your workstation POP3 client? Or, just barely conceivable, is the workstaion client downloading the same mail from both POP3 servers (internal and ISP)?Why, when I went with my own internal server, did the duplication start?
Since, behind the curtain, e-mail files are just plain text files, you can use any text editor available on the internal POP3 server to take a look at the e-mail files it is storing. Once we have some idea of what stage in the process is creating the duplication, we can look at the relevant technical details (like what OSs and what actual software is involved at each end).
