This sounds for all the world like a problem with your default route. I have no idea how to play with routing on a sun box, but I think you need to start with the low-level networking and proceed from there.
The way you play with routing on a SysV system is how he showed,
route add default 192.168.1.254
which works for standard netmasks. But if the user has a more creative netmask, more arguments are used. The default route normally does not stick after reboot. That sort of setting is a candidate for an rc#.d script.
Dennis hasn't told us how he has Shorewall setup. It can be geared not to respond to pings. He may need to post all four files that the Bering users guide mentions in addition to following the SR Faq. (Thanks for updating that Ray). The fact that his other boxes work is an indication that shorewall should be checked last.
Dennis needs to show us the outputs from the Unix box of:
ifconfig -a netstat -rn ping 192.168.1.254 ping leaf.ext.ipaddr.bynumber ping 63.194.213.179 arp -an uname -a
and to be helpful, he really should log all packets coming inbound to and outbound from eth1 with respect to the Unix box, and post the relevant syslog details.
If he has a switch or other MAC based filtering hardware, he might mention that and note the request for arp -an. Matt
