send (ATZ^M) -- "chat" reports that it plans to send this command (an AT-standard modem reset command) to the modem
expect (OK) -- "chat" reports that is expects the modem to respond with the string "OK"
ATZ^M^M -- "chat" actually sends the command (followed by 2 ^M (ASCII 13) characters)
ERROR^M -- the modem responds with this string, not the expected one
After that, chat does nothing, since it is waiting for an "OK" response from the modem.
I read this to mean that the LEAF box is connecting to the modem properly, but that there is (as you surmised) something wrong with the modem. I assume you've done the usual thing of powering down the modem for a few minutes, then restoring power, to eliminate any transient effects. (If not, try that.)
In your place, the next thing I'd do is check the modem docs to see if it has a provision for a hard reset (reset to factory settings) ... probably some sort of recessed button, possibly one you need to press with a stylus point or something else small.
If the modem is not completely fried ... and I wouldn't expect ANY response out of it if it were really fried ... that might get it to a state where it can operate.
If not, I'd suggest moving it to some host that has a terminal application (on a Linux system, minicom is the most basic one) you can use to send AT commands to the modem to try to see what is going on with it. Although the core of the AT command set is reasonably standard, most modems I've used have idiosyncratic "extended" AT commands, so exactly how to proceed here is a bit dependent on the specific modem you are using ... you should consult its docs. The "dump your settings to the terminal" AT command is, in my experience, one of the non-standard ones, and that's what you want to do to see what setting is wrong.

Hello,
I had a power outage yesterday morning, my leaf box wasn't affected because it's on a UPS. However my external modem is connected to the surge protector part of the UPS, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working. It was working fine prior to the power outage.
I've plugged the modem in & the power light comes on. When I reboot the leaf box, during POST 2 lights flash - Auto Answer & Carrier Detect if I remember correctly. After that I get nothing. Typing 'pon' which should dial the modem doesn't do anything, however when checking /var/log/ppp.log it lists 'date time firewall chat[18478]:' on each line then -
abort on (BUSY) abort on (NO CARRIER) abort on (VOICE) abort on (NO DIALTONE) abort on (NO ANSWER) send (ATZ^M) expect (OK) ATZ^M^M ERROR^M
is there any way to figure out whether ppp0 is pointing to the wrong place or determine whether nothing is being sent to the modem or not? I'd hook the modem up to another computer, but the only one with a wide COM port is another linux box & I'm unsure how to set that up either.
any ideas or help would be appreciated
