I have the Bering box setup w/ a crossover cable to another computer running windows98, and I try and ping from one to the other, neither works.
You answered only half the question (the "where" part). "neither works" does not answer the "how" part. See next comment for more on this.

Its immediately says the IP is unreachable.
It would be better in these instances for you to quote the exact command you enter (e.g., "ping 192.168.1.72") and the exact response you get (e.g., "No route to host") than to paraphrase as you have done (I don't *think* "IP is unreachable" is an actual response you get from any ping failure ... it certainly is not one I've ever seen).
From what you did send, I would suspect a problem with the routing table, but you've told us too little for me to be able to be more specific than that.

Forgot to load dhcpd in the syslinux.cfg file. I tried again with dhcpd loaded and shorewall not loaded, still same problem.
dhcpd is the DHCP *server*. The DHCP *client* (what you need to *get* an address via DHCP) on the Bering floppy is in the pump.lrp package.
(If you are not reading the Bering Installation Guide at http://leaf.sourceforge.net/doc/guide/binstall.html , you should be doing so. This distinction is made clear in section 11.)
I'm truly stumped, seems the ethernet cards are working, TCP/IP is working, I know the cable is good, and tried using a static ip on the machine connected to Bering. Can't get bering to communicate with the other machine, or vice versa. Can anyone tell me a next step?
Round up the usual suspects. That is, provide the information asked for in the SR FAQ (see below). And provide the exact commands you enter and the exact responses, as I've indicated above.
