A package is usually a gzip compressed tarfile - upx is only used for kernel.

I agree - the docs are somewhat hard to find, esp. if you don't know where to
look :) And some of the following links are not directly accessible from the
LEAF web page, but I'm shure they will be any time in the future.

Compiling depends if you develop for Bering or Bering-uClibc.

For Bering it may help to read:
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/jnilo/uml.html

For Bering-uClibc pls look into:
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/doc/guide/buc-devel.html

Packaging is explained here:
http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=1703&group_id=13751
and
http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=1461&group_id=13751

Another valuable source for developers is David Douthitts "Oxygen Developer
Guide":
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/doc/guide/O2-devel.html
