I have a newer thinkpad (770) but if your indicators are the same then:
- The 'pine tree' indicator should have an 'A' or else a '1' in it - these are your caps-lock and num-lock indicators.
- the 'square with up-down arrows inside' is your scroll-lock indicator.


Normally these indicators would be (usually green) LED's on one's keyboard.

Their flashing is a way for LILO to communicate where in the bootup process it failed (or perhaps why, too)? LILO doc'n would probably help you decode what they are trying to tell you -i.e. why LILO is failing.
