I have had success with Cooperative Linux (coLinux) on my Win2K workstation. Ends up being a console window on the desktop. From that I've launched VNC server and the used a WinVNC client into an X Windows Session. Used the Gentoo distribution and just had a ball. Take a look here http://www.colinux.org/ if you're M$ bound.
