It's a general 'issue' with linux and unix, if you write something to your storage media it's not directly written but buffered for some time. If you remove the media or reboot before doing a sync or umount, data can get corrupt. The lrcfg script umounts after a backup, but ofcourse doesn't know about mounts made by the user.
