The initrd_ide_cd package contains a vfat module, so long file names are
supported. We only use the filesystem for initial booting and backing up,
after booting the system runs completely in memory. I think that's the
biggest difference between something like openwrt and LEAF. If I'm not
mistaken openwrt uses the jffs2 filesystem "life" (wearing out the storage
media).

Together with the limitations of syslinux, grub and lilo not booting from
jffs2 I don't see a real need for supporting it as boot device fs.

True, that's one of the reasons I like a "run in memory" approach more
