Greetings the list,

I'm seeking for clues as to the frequent disconnects from the internet
that we're experiencing. Although 'persist' is amongst the options
listed in /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider we sometimes lose connection on
ppp0 - especially when users try to access hotmail or yahoo email
accounts.

Is this a shorewall settings issue? or does it relate to the speedtouch
USB modem which always starts up with the following errors in syslog:

Oct 19 18:50:01 firewall modem_run[32542]: Error reading interrupts
Oct 19 18:50:11 firewall kernel: usb.c: USB device 32 (vend/prod 0x6b9/0x4061)
is not claimed by any active driver.
Oct 19 18:50:22 firewall kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
Oct 19 18:50:22 firewall kernel: usbdevfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 32 ep 0x85
len 512 ret -110

Once initialised, daemon.log shows:

Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[32644]: Plugin /usr/lib/pppd/pppoatm.so loaded.
Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[32644]: PPPoATM plugin_init
Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[32644]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:0.38
Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[30042]: pppd 2.4.2 started by root, uid 0
Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[30042]: using channel 41
Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[30042]: Using interface ppp0
Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[30042]: Connect: ppp0 <--> 0.38
Oct 19 18:50:57 firewall pppd[30042]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic
0x8654ee28>]

However, if the connection is lost the only way to restore it is to
manually unload modules speedtch.o and crc32.o, issue if-down ppp0
and then reload the modules, if-up ppp0 and pppd call dsl-provider.
 - that's why I think its a USB issue and not necessarily ppp0...

any ideas?
