You are expecting a firewall application to run on a multi-purpose system rather than a dedicated box. You can get an old pentium with a CDROM and an ethernet card at Goodwill for under $40 and borrow keyboard and monitor from your main machine for configuration. Whether you go that cheap or buy some minimal harware new should depend on your needs.
