The main advantage is I'd rather run sshd than a web server on the

Yes, assuming your VPN is properly handling/routing the network
broadcast address.  And if for some reason that doesn't work, having the
VPN will let you use simpler methods of talking to the firewall if
desired.  Holler if you run into trouble...
