I'm surprised about response of this discussion. The length and content of
the answers of each participance is a symbol of an extra-class project! Wow,
I'm really impressed !

> Creating a list of "supported nics" sounds nice for new users
I do not try to postulate myself as a linux guru but I'm using Bering /
Dachstein since release 1.2x and use linux daily since 1998. So I'm not a
new user.
It is not a secret that most of the hardware manufacturer have only windows
users in their sight and therefor only produce linux drivers due to the
"must have one" statement.

>who defines what "supported" actually means?
This is up to the project. No - I do not try to make it easy for me. The
developers say what is basically supported. I personally would even support
the forum with - lets say Intel NICS. Other brands could be discussed in the
forum (by expericence). Perhaps a survey would help to figure out what
components bering users are using in their machines.

>And then, such a list usually has the tendency to become outdated rather
quickly,
You're right! But nowadays we have no other situation ;-)
Take a look at the e100, e1000 cards. They're survived many years. The
e1000e is the successor for pcie .I'm not getting money by propagating Intel
nics but afaik the have the best linux support.

> Speaking for myself - Bering uClibc does everything I need,
So do I and so it does for me.

Perhaps it is a good sign, that if a system is running stable nobody is
searching for support and is giving support : Bering seems to be running
quite well ;-)
