I took Vladimir's advice and downloaded the ver. 1.56 firmware from the Teletronics website. It is a simple Windows-based installer that works quickly and easily. I reflashed both the client and the AP pcmcia cards using the supplied utility.
So far, it appears the problem of signal dropouts has stopped or at least diminished. I will continue to monitor the access point for a few hours to see if it resurfaces. Many thanks to Vladimir for being so supportive of us wireless neophytes. It would have never occurred to me to download updated firmware for the radio card.
