Nope. It's the same old problem. There is lots of existing installed gear that doesn't know about the new fields. Updating protocols with a large installed base is a really really hard problem. The social/political issues are probably harder than the technical problems. If you have control of everything, you can install code on the servers that supports both old and new versions, then update the clients at your convenience. If you don't have control, there will be old clients hidden in dark corners that will never get updated. If clients have code in ROMs (think IoT) it will be hard/impossible to update even if you know that you want to do it. -- These are my opinions.
