Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I'll report back if I can make it work, just so it's recorded somewhere for posterity. Incidentally, may I suggest that you update the "Dependencies" section of https://github.com/jwiegley/ledger/blob/next/README.md ? Looking at that, I thought I had recent enough stuff (e.g., I have, I think, Boost 1.42), but when I cloned the repo and tried to follow the instructions, I got errors about how my stuff wasn't new enough. At which point I gave up.
