To give an inventory example similar to what I've been asked in the past:

"All Widgets of model 74 from Factory X made between 2013-12-03 and
2014-02-07 are defective and need to be recalled for service. Give me
a list of who they were sold to, including their contact information,
so we can contact them."

You'd need a lot of subaccounts and metadata attached to every
transaction to answer the above. Also, is there a way to select by
purchase/sale date for lots?

Has anyone considered attaching metadata to an account rather than to
a transaction? For example the bank account number could be
associated with the "Checking" account. Or in the example above,
contact information associated with an account. Any metadata would
probably need to have a timestamp attached, as account numbers and
contact information could change over time.
