So I went to git hub and found:

Debian 7 (wheezy) and Debian 8 (jessie) contain all components needed to
build ledger. You can install all required build dependencies using the
following command:

sudo apt-get install build-essential cmake autopoint texinfo python-dev \
     zlib1g-dev libbz2-dev libgmp3-dev gettext libmpfr-dev \
     libboost-date-time-dev libboost-filesystem-dev \
     libboost-graph-dev libboost-iostreams-dev \
     libboost-python-dev libboost-regex-dev libboost-test-dev

and then got this:

 apt-get install build-essential cmake autopoint texinfo python-dev \
zliblg-dev libbz2-dev libgmp2-dev gettext libmpfr-dev \
libboost-date-time-day libbooost-filestystem-dev \ libboost-graph-dev
libboost-iostreams-dev \ libbosst-python-dv libbosst-regex-dev
libboost-test-dev

I had previously just pasted in the commands and had gotten this:

apt-get install build-essential cmake autopoint texinfo python-dev \
> zlib1g-dev libbz2-dev libgmp3-dev gettext libmpfr-dev \

texinfo is already the newest version.
gettext is already the newest version.
gettext set to manually installed.
build-essential is already the newest version.
build-essential set to manually installed.
autopoint is already the newest version.
autopoint set to manually installed.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libboost-iostreams-dev : Depends: libboost-iostreams1.49-dev but it
is not going to be installed
 libbz2-dev : Depends: libbz2-1.0 (= 1.0.6-4) but 1.0.6-5 is to be installed
 libgmp3-dev : Depends: libgmp-dev (= 2:5.0.5+dfsg-2) but it is not
going to be installed
libmpfr-dev : Depends: libgmp-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libmpfr4 (= 3.1.0-5) but 3.1.2-1 is to be installed
 python-dev : Depends: python (= 2.7.3-4+deb7u1) but 2.7.5-5 is to be installed
Depends: python2.7-dev (>= 2.7.3-1~) but it is not going
to be installed
 zlib1g-dev : Depends: zlib1g (= 1:1.2.7.dfsg-13) but 1:1.2.8.dfsg-1
is to be installed

I may be misunderstanding when the output is telling me but it is
quite clear that I have hit an area where I am totally lost. When I
have persisted in pursuing areas like this in the past I have
generally
borked my complete system which has taken from 10 to 25 days of work
to correct things. I have zero interest in doing that again. It would
seem that I will be unable to use ledger given as I just cannot
install it.
