Btw, John resolved the mystery with the leddger itself, the problem was
that my ledger file generated by gnucash2ledger converter did produce
entries like:

account Expenses:Banka
        note Bank Service Charge
        check commodity == "HRK"

and after removing 'check commodity' lines, the performance was again on
par with the processing of stripped-down journal file.

It's OK to have side-projects for experiments which can be integrated
later in the main project, but here it's important to have, at least,
file compatibility syntax which is e.g. not the case with Beancount.
