You bet, I've been wanting a good chapter in the manual on value expressions
for a long time, but it seems I'm the only person qualified to write it just
now. They're a big part of what makes the C++ version of Ledger so powerful,
and flexible, and they are ubiquitous throughout the internals of Ledger. I
try to hide the details from the "user facing" interface as much as possible,
but having the ability to drop down into valexprs in a lot of places is very
convenient.

If any more questions come up, please don't hesitate to ask. My neglect of
your original posting doesn't mean that your issues are not welcome, or that
we don't care about the difficulties you've been facing.
