This does not seem to happen in v3.1.1:

While parsing file "ledger.xml", line 3:
Error: Unexpected whitespace at beginning of line
While parsing file "ledger.xml", line 2128:
Error: Directive '</ledger>' requires an argument

Is there any alternative to the XML format?
Are there any alternatives for reading+writing ledger files from a script
language for automated processing of transactions?
