I was at that game as well..............stood at the back of the Kop. It was a fantastic night, and Billy's goal remains my alltime most exciting moment as a Leeds fan. For all you whippersnappers out there, it is hard to explain just how thrilling it was to be playing Barcelona at that time. In those days, teams weren't made up of players from all over the world like they are now, and the concept of a top Spanish team with the 2 best players from the famous Dutch total football squad was unbelievably exotic. It was only a few months before that that they had reached the World Cup Final playing some of the greatest football ever seen. Cruyff, especially, was amazing. He was indisputably the best player in the world (well, apart from Billy, of course, in my view!) and had an incredible aura about him. Just seeing him on the pitch at Elland Road was fantastic.
And so when Joe Jordan brilliantly knocked Giles's ball down into the path of the incredibly unmarked Billy............for me, time seemed somehow to stand still. From where I was , it seemed he was a lot further out, but still I could tell it was a great chance, and somehow I had ages to think: wow! here we are playing against the best team in the world at Elland Road in the European Cup semifinal, and my favourite player has a chance to put us 1-0 up............I wonder what will happen...........and then BANG Billy just smacked it into the top corner! What a great lineup that was. No Norman Hunter or Peter Lorimer though. IIRC Hunter was suspended, and now I think about it I remember worrying about how we would deal with Cruyff & Neeskens without him. Then McQueen got a stupid red card in the second leg, so we had Norman and Madeley at the back in the Final..............I remember Hunter having a great shot from miles out in the first half which went inches over, and Madeley heading the ball into the box for Lorimer's goal. Tackles flying in, most players just getting up and getting on with it, only one yellow (for dissent!), the white clock on the screen, a great round of 'Gelderd aggro' when it all got a bit heated, Sir Eddie 'the last waltz' Gray in his pomp (my all time favourite Leeds player), speedy reanie showing him to he the best right back we've seen in the last 50 years, the rolls Royce of footy putting in a great shift, dave Stewart the keeper everyone seems to gave overlooked but who was quality, standing at the top level and a proper game of footy as I remember it. Brilliant.
