Yes indeed.  One of the minor irritations of American sport I'm afraid.
Like the Superbowl, the winners of which are also called the "World
Champions".

Then again, the World Championship Coal Race is held in Gommersal every
Easter, and I'm not aware that many international coal carrying champions
are invited to attend... :D
