As someone to whom "shit" has most definitely happened I am very glad that me and my missus did take out decent life insurance - it has allowed me to pay off the mortgage and work less and concentrate on looking after the kids and provide them with a few grand when they want to set up for themselves. fingers x'd you or she will never need it but my recommendation is to get as much as you can afford.
