No doubt most saw the game on TV so I won't describe the incidents in detail, just a few thoughts on our performance.
I felt sorry for young Zac Thompson, he was obviously revved up for the occasion and following the example of his more senior midfielder in how to approach the game. I think with 11 men on the pitch we would have got something from this game. Yet again we looked a much better team away from home. Here's my scores : Lonergan - 6 A couple of decent saves and a couple of worrying moments. Needs to show more presence in the area for me. Lees - 7 I think he did really well playing out of position. Robinson - 7. He lacks pace and gave the ball away a couple of times but generally he defended well today and one great last ditch tackle in the first half. Bromby -5. Don't rate him, never have. You only have to see how a lump like Roberts skipped past him to realise he ain't up to it when it comes down to defending basics. Bruce - 7. Much better performance. Was ball watching for their goal when he should have got goal side of the Reading fancy dan sub. Get him fitter, try to keep him injury free and I think he can do a job for us. Thompson -2. What can you say ? He started brightly, he looks a great prospect to me, it was never a sending off. Unlucky. Brown - 7. I thought he worked hard and kept going showing that has got something to offer. Some games I've seen he looks painfully short of fitness. Not sure about some of his tackles. For me they're great but most weeks he's going to get a red for them. Pugh - 6 Like Brown I thought he worked hard and did a lot of running, the difference being he has no pace and no creativity to offer. Should have been sent off -didn't even get a yellow. Did we really spend half a million on this bloke ? Snodgrass - 6. One decent free-kick and again worked very hard defensively but on the ball he was poor. Like Macca he likes pace and acceleration. McCormack - 7. He was the only player displaying a bit of skill and quality. Unlucky with his shot second half. Unfortunately like Snoddy and Becchio he lacks the pace and acceleration that is required at this level to be effective. Becchio - 4. Really poor for me. Fans of his will point to the fact he played alone up front and was isolated but didn't that just highlight how ineffective he is. He got muscled out of it by a bearded pub player and was second best to him all afternoon. Did Becchio have a shot , get on the end of a header, beat his man, hold it up and bring others into the game ? No ! He just fell over. Surely his time is running out in this team? He is just not good enough, I'd rather see a youngster given a chance.
