Hey Betty, Just sounds like you have your 'resolution' set too high and the computer graphics adapter cannot compete with it. Try the old monitor with basic settings, then plug in the new monitor without altering the settings.
If that don't work, then try Eric's suggestion of swapping cables, try another computer, evern plug into a laptop and try that way.
