On getting a ticket to Leeds - not a good idea to try buying at Kings Cross when you want to leave, especially if that's peak times - the 'documentary' series currently on the beeb had someone being quoted £300 quid for ticket from Kings Cross to Leeds. Not sure if it was a single or return but still...
Much better to book your tickets in advance. Most train companies allow you to do this directly but you can also try http://www.thetrainline.com/. Generally I find them pretty good.
