Øystein, Yes, DO NOT attempt to buy a train ticket on your day of travel, it is 
the daftest thing to do. For starters you are likely to be unable to sit down!

Book in advance and book your seat, you can probably get a first class ticket 
now cheaper than  normal closer to the day.

Use the trainline as Guy says, I say this as someone who works in the station 
(nothing to do with trains we just built their new station and tarted up their 
old one for them) and someone who travels up North on the train sometimes. 

It's pretty easy and you can pick & choose your train - it's also a better bet 
to avoid peak hours (8-10, 4-6) and Friday afternoons etc. - you'll see when 
attempting to book.
