Few great players ever make great managers -- or even good ones -- for
that exact reason:  they do what they do by instinct rather than through
the hard slogging work that elevates an average player to just make the
bench.  That's why the great managers tend to be players who were barely
serviceableŠbut managed to make themselves such with their heads and with
their hard work when their talent would never have otherwise been enough.

Temperament?  Yes.  I agree with you.  There's no one temperament that
makes a good coachŠand short of something like "homocidal maniac" or "lazy
f*ck" I'm not sure that there are many temperaments that couldn't work.
If he meant "doesn't work hard enough"Šwhy didn't he say so?
