Couple of thoughts from last nights game.
We played a very mediocre League of Ireland side who have been
struggling at the bottom of the league all season, but who had recently put a
few wins together. Despite the lack of most of our first team squad, we pretty
much bossed the game, and ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Rudi dominated the centre of the park and sprayed some lovely 40 yard
passes around from there. We seemed to be playing nice football and there was
less “hoof it up to Matt Smith” than I thought there might have been, when I
saw him on the team sheet. Smith is basically our version of Peter Crouch,
without the deft touch and fitness. He seemed to be slow and a bit heavy but
was a threat every time the ball got into the box.

Young Chris Dawson was lively in the middle of the park, and after some
initial hiccups settled well and was busy and assured on the ball. He’s small
and a little lightweight but will be one to watch for the future. Ryan Hall
scored twice on the night, but could have given the team a few more chances if
he looked up occasionally when on the ball.

The back four were comfortable all night, but that probably had more to
do with the quality of the opposition. Noel Hunt put in a good shift and looked
sharp for his 60 minutes.

Overall I was pleased with the effort they put in, but on the grounds
that most of the team from last night will be on the periphery of the first
team squad, it wasn’t really surprising that they gave their all. Overall
enjoyable for a meaningless game!!
