Actually it's not a right wing politician but a comedian (albeit a political
one) and they are trying to ban him from performing.

Anelka says its anti-establishment NOT anti-Semitic.

Really we all ought to be a bit less touchy on these things, BUT the bottom
line is that Anelka used it to push his ideological views and that is
against the rules and so he'll be banned, it would be the same if it was the
Black Power salute

No Ed, what I am saying is that in France the gesture is well known as an
anti Semitic gesture and Anelka (being French) is very good mates with some
loon right wing politician. The gesture was made on the day the French govt.
tried to ban (or take some action, can't remember exactly) that politician's
party.

I really don't know why you have to be so contrary. I wasn't even expressing
a view, I was simply passing on what I heard.

What is Anelka's explanation for the gesture?

abuse. having said that I take issues with far right and far left as well.

that some think its a movement of defiance against the establishment, so
maybe anarchistic. A french academic guy says that its likely that most that
use the sign dont even know what it means. Finally a UK expert on french
right wing said: "Dieudonne has been involved with anti-racist left-wing
activists as well as far-right activists. "At the moment, the use of this
gesture seems too diffuse to fit any simple right-left interpretation."

interpretations of that thing. I do prefer the real Quenelle as its defined
in the larousse gastronomic though.
