9/3/2014 - Steve continues to have problems with the sodium in his blood and
because of the glucose drip (to reduce the sodium in his blood) and liquid
food he is getting, his blood sugars continue in the mid to high 20's. They
tried to tell me that the two strawberries I chopped up and put in his 1/3
cup of rice krispies this morning made his blood sugar go up and stay there
for the last 8 hours (this is the only food that he has had differently from
what they are giving him and he would not eat anything solid they brought to
him) First they told me I could bring food from home (except I had to bring
hot food already) hot as they had no way to heat it at the hospital) and
this included fruit, yogurt, milk and anything else that would get him to
eat. Now I am down to milk. They have been giving him increasing doses of
Lanthus (sp) insulin, which has had no effect. They have been doing this
for three days. I have asked a couple times if they might consider that
this is not the correct insulin for him. When he was in insulin as a
diabetic, he was on Humulog (sp) which kept his blood sugar rock solid at 5.
Evidently they cannot wipe the "expert" label off their foreheads long
enough to consider that they may be mistaken in this case and give the other
one a try. Meanwhile, the high blood sugar is having an effect on his
already damaged organs and he is still confused and wants to sleep a lot. I
still manage to get him to drink as much as possible and now helping him
with the exercises he is to do for physio, when he is awake to do them. The
leg ones are difficult as his left leg is still heavily bandaged. If his
sugars continue to be high, it will prolong the healing or cause other
problems. The doctors are not in over the weekend and I have requested the
diabetic people (who have not actually come face to face with Steve, but are
prescribing from behind some closed door somewhere) to show up and explain
to me why they are not exploring other insulins. I try to keep his mind
active with news, sports and even brought in a portable DVD player and some
of his favourite films to keep him awake and somewhat active. He does the
best he can but it is difficult. I don't know what else to do and the
experts seem to either. It feels like they are guessing alot of the time.
I feel like I am going mad. I wish I could win the lottery and find a
handful of experts from around the world to set him on a positive course.
Physio only show up once in a while as they don't have the staff. Seems to
be alot of that going around. Being severely ill gets you no special
attention. Anyway. progress is slow and even takes a few steps backward.
Bless him..He is trying, but sometimes it feels like its only him and me
doing so. I am trying again with making something for his lunch and taking
it in to see if I can get him to eat or if they have put him off food
altogether. Cannot say when the next update will be. Thanks, Paula
