I recommend the following

Coyote : Allen Steel - "interstellar exploration and settlement" The
stories of the journey to the new planet and the perils and battles to form
a colony are wonderful.

Hyperion : Dan Simmons - outstanding story written in a pilgrim's progress
style. Several unconnected people make the journey to Hyperion and their
stories of why will amaze.

Summertide : Charles Sheffield. The twin planets of Opal and Quake are
orbiting close to their suns creating a once in a lifetime event. Book is
full of great characters and introduces the mysterious "Builders" who have
created mysterious artifacts throughout the known universe

Gateway : Frederik Pohl. - "Gateway is a space station built into a hollow
asteroid (or perhaps the dead heart of a comet) constructed by the Heechee,
a long-vanished alien race. Humans have had limited success understanding
Heechee technology found there and elsewhere in the solar system"

Mother of all Storms: John Barnes - I've read this many time, a release of
methane causes a super hurricane which causes a multitude of problems. A
bunch of great characters with a cyberpunk feel.

Stand on Zanzibar: John Brunner - Another great story "The story is set in
2010, mostly in the United States. A number of plots and many vignettes are
played out in this future world, based on Brunner's extrapolation of social,
economic, and technological trends. The key main trends are based on the
enormous population and its impact: social stresses, eugenic legislation,
widening social divisions, future shock, and extremism. Certain of Brunner's
guesses are fairly close, others not, and some ideas clearly show their
1960s mind-set."

Hope these help.

Cheers
