As his playing career, therefore, appears to be at an end, I'd just like to lament the passing of what SHOULD have been one of the greatest centre halves this country has ever produced.
With all the talk at the moment being of John Stones who, whilst being able to PLAY football, is suspect defensively (Fairly key to a defenders role!) and yet is valued at £53M! Had Woodgate not been ravaged by injury, I think he would have been up there with Beckenbauer, Moore, Charlton and Hunter etc. as possibly the finest footballing centre half ever and his value (On the Stones scale) would have been huge! He was a daft lad and was, sadly, tarnished by that incident, but on the park the boy could play AND defend, he had it all.
