On a slightly tangental thread, I went to see Hertha Berlin v Dynamo Dresden last week in a German Cup match. Dresden brought around 30,000 fans - they’re in a lower league, and a real grudge match to boot, with lots of extra police, no alcohol in the ground etc.
What an eye-opener in terms of atmosphere - best I’ve experienced for many a year. Dresden fans unfurled 2 big f*** off banners which, genuinely menacingly, said YELLOW MADNESS. Given their end was like a firework display all night madness was the right word. Train there was fun - absolutely rammed with fans of both teams, carrying crates of beer, and putting the empties back in the crate. 2-2 after 90, 3-3 after 120, Hertha won 5-4 on pens. 70,400 there. I heartily recommend a visit if you’re in Berlin, especially if it coincides with Bayern or Dortmund. The atmosphere was amazing.
