I was screaming out last night for Howson to be brought on - but apparently he
wasn't even in the squad.

Anyone know why not?

We need a midfield general. I've seen Prutton play well, and I know Carole
can pass. But without some solidity and calmness in the middle, we crumple
like a Lada in a shunt with a Transit van...

Not pleased with that analogy as I get Rusty Lada Taxi's a lot and there are
a lot of mad Transit Drivers here

Subject: [LU] Bournemouth

Last night was a bit like the Forest game - we played pretty badly, but the
result looks good on paper. Kandol's early goal gave us a lot of hope - even
though their keeper probably should have held onto the initial shot - but
for the next hour, we were woeful. The bloke in front of me must have said
"SECOND BALL!" about 150 times during the match. And he had a point. We were
knocking a lot of balls down for... Bournemouth. Our passing was poor, and
even though Tres and Becks were winning most of the "'Arry Bassett" balls
punted forward, they never came to a white shirt.

The equaliser was well deserved - their left winger had tormented Fraser
(who had a poor game, but not as bad as Prutton - he just looked lost for
most of the match) and their strike when it came was pretty good. There
seemed to be little communication on the pitch. We defended way too deep and
midfield just went missing far too often. Worse, if you defend deep, you at
least expect to be winning balls and denying the opposition space around
your own box, but too often last night it was "after you", "no, after you" -
or, as the terrific commentator behind me put it, "What the f*** are you
looking at Heath for, he's not looking at you!"

So we started to edge back in near the hour mark, with Seb's cracker coming
against the run of play. They had a man sent off about ten minutes after
that (retaliation - which is understandable: they're outplaying the
favourites in the league after their own terrible run, yet they're still
getting beaten), but until Tres's late goal you'd have thought it was us
down to ten men. How many more times are we going to get a let-off?

Crowd was good - someone said 1,500, but since at least half of us were in
the uncovered South stand (made of scaffolding a la Priestfield) sometimes
it was hard to hear our own songs. I'd say the front two did as much as they
could with no support from midfield; Rui Marques is worth about £3m to a
Premier League side so we'll probably have to sell him (although last night
wasn't his best of the season); Douglas and Prutton looked drugged;
Richardson was confused (which is sad: at my last game - Portsmouth - he and
Prutton seemed to work so well together); Carole was outstanding on the run
and shooting, but barely found a pass all night. Hughes and Heath were
laboured at best and shite at worst; Clapham - dunno, really, which says a
lot.

Da Costa came on, fell over, did that Iberian thing of spreading your arms
out wide while you're still on the ground. So he can pout like Ronaldo...
but can he play like him?

Three problems: we defended way too deep. Our midfield disappeared into the
defence without apparently making it any more effective. And we played a
Gandalf ("You shall not pass!").

We need a midfield general. I've seen Prutton play well, and I know Carole
can pass. But without some solidity and calmness in the middle, we crumple
like a Lada in a shunt with a Transit van...
